February 22-24, 2024

JUMP-Start (Journey for Underrepresented Students in Medicine Program), is a 2.5 day program in Kansas City, MO designed for premedical undergraduate students from marginalized groups that live in the surrounding area. JUMP-Start will immerse students in medical school curriculum and equip them with tools to be successful in their application process. This program provides invaluable resources, networking and mentoring opportunities completely free of charge.

About JUMP-Start

Mission and Goal:
JUMP-Start is designed to provide opportunity, guidance and support to marginalized pre-med students with the goal of increasing student diversity at Kansas City University and in the field of medicine. Marginalized students include pre-med students that are underrepresented in medicine - members of the LGBTQIA+ group, or students who identify as having a disability.

JUMP-Start will be hosted by medical students with the support of staff and faculty to give participants a brief look into the lives of osteopathic medical students. Events would include workshops and presentations from the Admissions department on how to be the best possible applicant, OMM philosophy and treatment, mock Standard Patient Encounters, and experiencing a lecture given by a KCU professor. In addition to these events, the students participating in the program will have an opportunity to network and identify a mentor that will guide them through the application process.

By partnering with various universities around the Kansas City area, KCU can recruit marginalized pre-medical students that are interested in medicine. As an osteopathic school, JUMP-Start will also educate students on the osteopathic tenants and osteopathic manipulative treatment, thus providing an educational and alternative practice not familiar to many.

Inspiration for JUMP-Start originates from Qwynton Johnson’s personal experience with the DREAM (Diversity Recognized, Emphasized and Assimilated into Medicine) program hosted by Western University College of Osteopathic Medicine in the Pacific Northwest.
